So Six Days Later...

I don't feel much better.

I'm putting the yoga on hold for now.  I'll keep checking in here but I really just want my back to heal.  I hope this is nothing more serious than a pulled muscle, because I have crappy health insurance.  Maybe I should get into my car and roll into a tree at slow speed or something - because I have good auto insurance!

I saw a good movie yesterday called The Spectacular Now.  It was a romance/drama about a high school senior who drinks too much and doesn't care much about the future.  Throughout the whole movie I found myself rooting for him and wishing he'd stop making bad choices.  I wanted him to see that he was worth it and had his whole life ahead of him.  Then toward the end I realized I was just like him - not with drinking particularly, but with my health in general.  I just need to get out of my own way.  If I continue on as I am, following this plan and that for a week here, 3 weeks there, I'm going to be a bitter old 70 year old who can't climb a flight of stairs and takes insulin.  I have to change the trajectory of my health.

I'm not going to do any kind of diet right now.  I saw some advice a little while ago that I thought was good...I think it was from Rob over at DDP Yoga vs. Rob.  If you can't make a big change in your diet or the idea of giving things up is too difficult, just start adding more healthy things in.  Don't worry about cutting things out right now.  So for today, that's what I'm going to do.  I have an awesome juicer and today I'm going to start adding in Mean Green juice from Joe Cross:

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Yield: 1-2
Serving Size: 16oz. (500 mls)

Ingredients
  • 1 cucumber
  • 4 celery stalks
  • 2 apples
  • 6-8 leaves kale (Australian tuscan cabbage)
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tbsp ginger
Directions
  1. Wash all produce well
  2. Peel the lemon, optional
  3. Juice
  4. Pour over ice
  5. Enjoy!
In his documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead, Joe did a long juice fast, and this was his staple. I highly recommend that movie, by the way.  Very inspiring and well-done.

It's a place to start.  I'm not going to do a juice fast.  I'm pretty much tired of forcing things on myself.  I'm just going to start evening out my diet to include more healthy things.

Here's another thing I'm going to do:  Homemade frozen liver pills.

I have never liked the taste of liver, which is a shame because it's SO nutritionally dense.  The first step is to find good quality liver - maybe at whole foods or a farmer's market.  Liver from a grass-fed animal is ideal.  It's not expensive, and it makes a LOT of supplements unnecessary if your diet is otherwise uneven (like mine).

So that's the plan for now - adding, not subtracting.  Focusing on health rather than on weight.

Hugs to all who have taken the time to read this.

  1. Yeah! I think that's a great idea to start adding instead of always just trying to take things away. I might try doing that myself. These sound like some great ideas! Keep it up : )
